Stuart Armfield (British 1916-2000) was born in Surrey. He worked at Ealing Studios 1935-40, but also painted, exhibiting locally and abroad. After WW2 he produced Symbolist works which featured black models, chessboards and keys, sought after by such collectors as King Hasson of Morocco, Prince Chula of Thailand and the actor Eric Porter. This particular painting falls into that category, and it would seem up to the viewer to apply their own interpretation of the meaning of the composition. Ironically, Armfield was a Quaker pacifist and a conscientious objector, and the only work of his in a public institution at the time of his death, was in the Imperial war Museum.
