John Falconer Slater (British 1857-1937) was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, becoming a professional painter in his mid 20's. He was a versatile and prolific painter, tackling many subjects in a range of media. Much of his work is in oil, painted outdoors on location. Indeed the above oil may well have been painted that way, as its vigorous brush strokes and impressionistic handling of the paint suggest a work undertaken at pace.  He is extensively represented across many museums and galleries across the North East.
