Henry William Phelan Gibb (British 1870-1948) was born in Northumberland. He was initially trained by his father, Thomas Henry Gibb, and much of his earlier work followed a more traditional style. He painted landscape, architecture and figures but when he moved to Paris in 1906, he felt the influence of Cezanne and began to develop a more spontaneous style. This oil on canvas is an example of his earlier work, with a panoramic Scottish highland scene, well executed with strong colour, capturing the atmosphere of the subject.
